Description: This dataset contains the 1:1 000 000 geological units data for New Zealand. The dataset is a product of the Geological Map of New Zealand 1: 1 000 000 project and was produced by GNS Science. It represents the most current mapping of the geology of New Zealand in a single dataset at a scale of 1:1 000 000. The dataset is stored in an ESRI vector geodatabase and exported to Geoserver and ArcGIS Server. The dataset comprises polygons with each polygon having attributes describing the type of geological unit, its content, name and age. It complies with the GeoSciML Portrayal standard for GeologicUnitView and fields required by that standard were populated using the CGI Controlled Vocabulary (2012-11).

Copyright Text: Edbrooke, S.W.; Heron, D.W.; Forsyth, P.J.; Jongens, R. (compilers) 2014: Geological Map of New Zealand 1:1 000 000. GNS Science Geological Map 2. Lower Hutt, New Zealand. GNS Science. ISBN 978-1-927278-57-4. ISSN 1177-3014. The Geological Map of New Zealand 1:1 000 000 was compiled by Steve Edbrooke (Kermadec Islands, North Island and northern South Island), Jane Forsyth (southern South Island, Stewart Island and the sub-Antarctic islands) and Richard Jongens (Fiordland). Map design, digital cartography and GIS development was by David Heron. Digital capture was by Maureen Coomer, Aleksandra Lukovic, Belinda Smith Lyttle and Delia Strong. The map was compiled almost entirely from published maps from the QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand series, with minor updating where more recent data was available. Compilers of the QMAP sheets were Andrew Allibone, David Barrell, John Begg, Graham Bishop, Kyle Bland, Fred Brook, Roger Cooper, Simon Cox, Steve Edbrooke, Jane Forsyth, Mike Isaac, Mike Johnston, Richard Jongens, Peter Kamp, Julie Lee, Graham Leonard, Colin Mazengarb, Simon Nathan, Mark Rattenbury, Ian Speden, Pat Suggate, Dougal Townsend, Ian Turnbull, Adam Vonk, and Colin Wilson. Geology of the Kermadec, Bounty, Snares, Antipodes, Auckland and Campbell islands, not included in the QMAP coverage, was compiled from a variety of published sources and, for the sub-Antarctic islands, recent unpublished mapping by Ian Turnbull. The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) provided the bathymetric data. Land Information New Zealand provided the topographic data. The map has been reviewed by David Barrell, John Begg, Greg Browne, Nick Mortimer and Mark Rattenbury. The DVD dataset was reviewed by Mark Rattenbury and Nick Mortimer. The post-QMAP, Geological Map of New Zealand 1:1 000 000 was produced as part of the GNS Science Regional Geological Mapping project, supported by public research funding from the Government of New Zealand.
