Service Description: The active fault data displayed here are from the New Zealand Active Faults Database (‘Database’), prepared by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited (GNS Science). The Database includes two sets of active faults (1:250,000 scale and higher resolutions) and Fault Avoidance. The 1:250 000 active faults are from the New Zealand Active Faults Database and cover New Zealand mainland. The Higher Resolution active faults and Fault Avoidance Zones are available only within parts of Kapiti Coast District, Porirua City, Upper Hutt City, Lower Hutt City, Wairoa District, Hastings District and Central Hawkes Bay District. If the Fault Avoidance Zones are used to assist future land use planning, this should be done in accordance to the Ministry for the Environment "Planning for Development on or Close to Active Faults" (Kerr et al. 2003). The Fault Awareness areas show where there may be a surface fault rupture hazard but further work is needed to define a Fault Avoidance Zone.
